What am I doing wrong?

Draw a rectangle.
Copy it multiple times so it is staggered.
Want to trim them at a vertical end line (roof sheathing boards at end of roof line).
They won't trim and have to be exploded first.
Then won't trim each horizontal line of each rectangle, even if I click lines where exposed separately (as opposed to on top of each other)
Some times a line cannot be picked to trim it. It only can be picked with a window from the right or below. Which means it cannot be trimmed.
