very upset

deathguppie
This post was updated on .
I've used Qcad for years.  I even paid for versions to help support it.  Now I've switched to librecad because it was available, and I'm an open source advocate.

Last night I spent all night working on some drawing for a project I want to do in my own time.  Left my computer open and worked on it this morning.  Save, save save.. that's my motto.  I always save.

I turned off my computer and went to work.  Tonight I came home only to find that opening the file (which is now an IFF file instead of a DXF from Qcad) leaves a blank page.  All of my work is gone.. All of it..

I cannot even say how upset I am for fear of making babies cry on these forums.. I took time to register just to say how upset I am.  I was so excited to keep working on my project, and now I have to start all over again.

I'll have to find an old version of Qcad because I no longer trust this one.  I don't know what happened I'm using Ubuntu 13.04 the standard packaged version of librecad.   I saved in the "default format" and lost all of my work by doing so.

EDIT:
OK, I figured out that if I save it in DXF format it saves and opens properly.  Why, why would devs create such a horrible default format that doesn't save or read properly.  It's like a trap to mess with people that expect the program to save their work.

EDIT2:
I'm starting again, from scratch.. I'm still mad..

" I took time to register just to say how upset I am."
Thanks for taking time to tell this. And some constructive info and not like "F U  you a......   you're §$$%&! ... and I hate your &%/?§$/\§  program".

"I saved in the "default format" and lost all of my work by doing so. "
Unfortunately I do not have 13.04 and this is what my save file formats look like.
So there is no default format.

Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us

If I press the save button the first entry in the file format is selected (dxf 2007).

Can you please tell me which version of LibreCad you have?
(the number from Help->About  AND from the "Ubuntu Software-Center" in the "Version" line)

"I'm starting again, from scratch.. I'm still mad.. "
Well, if LibreCAD saves your work auctomatically in a format it can't open there is a reason to be mad.

I had the same experience as Deathguppie.
I thought it had to do with using several computers but reading this I
think there's someting wrong with the saving-command.
I also got a blank screen, and I can't delete the file from my disc, I
have to check what the error-message was that popped-up.

I use the daily-builds of Librecad and update once a week.

deathguppie:

This is a old bug corrected in LC 1.0.3 and 2.0.0RC, then, you are using the old 1.0.2, please update your LC version.

About lff format: these format are *only* for fonts, and only save blocks defining glyps.

I'm sorry you lost your job :-(

LC have a autosaved function, you can found it in menu "edit->application preferences", "Defaults" tab.
normal file: somename.dxf
autosaved file: #somename.dxf

Thanks for the reply.. Calling people who work on free software names, is rude and uncalled for.  I was upset about losing my work, not for getting free software.

I checked and I was using 1.0.2.  So now I've upgraded, and things are normal again.  Thanks.

And after some more work, I'm nearly back to where I was when I lost everything.  Persistence is everything.

Sorry to hear about the lost work, thanks for bringing up the problem.
Ubuntu 13.10 will have 1.0.3.

On a related note, what is the roadmap/anticipated release schedule
for LibreCAD 2?

I fixed this bug in 1.0 series after 1.0.3:

commit a81bbd403057301b3e7de160c076b0977ae254b0
Author: Dongxu Li <dongxuli2011@gmail.com>
Date:   Tue Jul 16 14:19:52 2013 -0400

    Bug#421, avoid saving to LFF by default, continued

We need to test whether this bug still exists in the 2.0 series.

For this type of series data loss causing bugs, we will spend time on:

1, review why LFF could be a default saving format in some user cases (no previous default). Find a solution to avoid this from happening at all;
2, review the LFF file filter process, when the filter finds an entity it can not handle, the filter should report an error, with some GUI error messages, and hopefully, mark the document as "unsaved";
3, generate a GUI message to remind user LFF is chosen, and this format isnt' meant for CAD;

Urgent actions needed:

Release 1.0.4, if Ries has no time here, I will test and release 1.0.4, which includes fixes for data loss by LFF format.

On 2.0.0 stabilization,

1, we get trouble with OS/X still, I don't work on mac much, and we don't have any developers with mac expertise. Maybe, we can release first, and try to fix os/x whenever issues reported by users;
2, 2.0.0 is quite stable for me on Linux.

basically, I would like to see release of 2.0.0 as soon as possible.

@dxli
I found the bug http://sourceforge.net/p/librecad/bugs/421/
but don't know how to find the commit.
Can you please tell me how to find commits on sourceforge?

Hi,

on SourceForge you couldn't find any commits, because the code repository is on github. You have to look there.

On github, with a given commit hash, it's very simple. Use a URL in the form of
https://github.com/<owner>/<project>/commit/<hash>
 where <owner> and <project> is LibreCAD and <hash> ist the commit hash, complete or an unique prefix of it.

https://github.com/LibreCAD/LibreCAD/commit/963a937

You can do this anonymous, without an account on github.

You know, that this bug is in the version 1 only, it is solved in release 1.0.3.

investing less than half an hour into Search function can save hours or days of waiting for a solution

That's awesome thanks. (just what I needed)
