Hi all from Hertfordshire, England...

Hi all,
New member signing in, building myself a CNC plasma table and need to Lear cad for the first time.

Librecad looks to be a great bit of software.

Hello Dave,

always good to see fellow CNC users!
Out of curiosity, what CAM system are you planning to use?

Cheers,
Ries

I'm new to all of this :)

All my machinery is manual old-school iron so I am trying to learn cad, cam and CNC in one go.

I'm building the controls on Mach3 and using sheetcam for compiling the G-code.

I tried using illustrator for the source DXF file but it's a complex program to learn, being used to x-y coordinates seems to make learning cad a bit easier, should be ok once I've learnt the basics.

Hey Dave,

my machine is a Mechmate and I do mostly woodworking, all 2.5D and 3D with a bit of indexer.
Sheetcam sound’s alright for CAM and the sort of work you will be doing, and you cannot go wrong with Mach3 once it’s running on your PC (I use LinuxCNC).

I wouldn’t go through illustrator or other ‘paint’ sort of package and stick to to true CAD/CAM, it’s usually not worth the effort, unles
you really have something creative to make :)

Ooh, Mechmate, that's a big machine :). Been reading their forum for build ideas etc, very nice.

I'm hoping to stick with cad, started watching the videos on YouTube, very useful resource.
