The LibreCAD user manual (Development version) consists of:

1. Reference section – is simply an explanation of each commands (or tools) available in LibreCAD. The reference provides a brief description of the command and what parameters are necessary. It is the dry, boring information important to be able to gain an understanding of the purpose of each command. There is no explanation of how to use any particular command or the circumstance that would require it. Those explanations are /will be documented in the 'User Guide' section.

e.g. Line -> Rectangle {DrawLineRectangle}: Draw a rectangle by assigning the points of two diagonally opposite corners.

2. User Guides – or ‘How to Guides’, are intended to provide a the steps necessary to perform a particular task. These task are generic in the sense that they can be used in any type of drawing or circumstance. They are the ‘building blocks’ of completing drawing.

e.g. Printing Guide

3. Other things – Other types of documentation are to provide an understanding or background information.

e.g. About / Overview or appendices

Tutorials - ‘Tutorials’ provide step by step examples on how to create drawings for a specific purpose. A tutorial doesn’t require a full understanding of the commands used, but provides sufficient detail to allow the user to complete the drawing.

e.g. Drawing a carport truss or a circuit board
I've placed a separate page on the wiki for the tutorials. Since they general seem to be task specific, there is a potential for there to be a lot of them, and it would be onnerous to update them with each release. Also, having on the wiki allows link to links to videos, sample drawing ,etc.

See this section for the current status of the User Manual.

Hello Document Writers

As LibreCAD 2.2.0-RC1 moves towards release I've started writing guides and tool descriptions. I've only posted a couple of pages so far, but as it has been pointed out elsewhere in the forums, the are a number of manuals, guides, and tutorials posted throughout the wiki, unfortunately many are out of date. While I've started writing a couple of things, in the back of my head I'm always thinking 'Where should this go to make is easy to find for (new) users?', "What topics/format/etc should be used?", and many other questions that relate to writing documentation for LibreCAD.

There are other areas in the forum, notably “Tutorials / Manual topics”, that discuss many items related to user documentation that will useful for writing up-to-date and relevant documents. Some of these can be adopted or integrated into new pages, but in a structured way that would allow users to navigate the documentation, but a good starting point would be helpful.

LoB (Lord of Bikes) has created this sub-forum to allow us as documentation writers to discuss topics related to documentation. For those that are wanting to contribute to LibreCAD's documentation, I'd like to invite comments, ideas, and even submissions.

The LibreCAD ver 2.2 User Manual Style looks terrific but the functionality could be improved with a few style tweaks. I like to split the 1920x1080 Win10 screen with the application on the left half and the documentation on the right.

I prefer:
* context menu icon to access chapters
* contents heading on the right side of window to reduce distraction reading from left to right
* only display chapter contents headings
* hide contents headings when window is reduced below 50% of screen (currently set to about 50% of window)

eg: example

------------
Edit:

Window: 40% Contents pane, 15% Margin, 45% Content

How are docs hosted locally so changes can be viewed before uploading Pull Request?

Sphinx and Mkdocs are installed but I need to run a batch file in Win10 to run them.

Hi all,
I'm re-editing (re-diagraming) the 20170701 LibreCAD Users Extensive Manual (for LibreCAD 2.1.3). I need of LibreCAD file in the SVG format.

Where can I get it?

I will update the source and PDF versions weekly for suggestions.

I won't give a new "face" for the format and the order of all. I intend that this version be the official printed version.

Could you help me?

Thank you in advance.
tag:forum.librecad.org,2006:post-5716606How to Contribute2018-11-08T09:51:18Z2019-04-18T14:47:05ZGary S
The documentation for LibreCAD will ultimately end up in a GitHub repository where it can be maintained and updated as new versions of the application are released.

There are several paths that the will lead to the documentation on GitHub, but generally it starts with a submission from anyone who wants to contribute. Submissions can be via the forum, as a post (or as an email), directly to the wiki, or even via GitHub – what ever is the easiest for the contributor.

Eventually all relevant submissions be taken from the wiki and copied into the user documentation ‘source code’ that will be hosted on GitHub. Documents hosted on GitHub uses GitHub’s own formatting (markup language), so any submissions from the forum or wiki will need to be modified by the maintainers as it is incorporated into the documentation source. As the documentation will need to be edited by the maintainers, extensive formatting of a submission should be avoided.

To help with the organization of the user documentation, a ‘landing page’ has been created on the wiki. The link to the landing page can be found in the sub-forum’s head line. The landing page is the outline for the “LibreCAD User Documentation” with the proposed sections and links to related pages. The wiki is very much a live documentation and will be changing as the wiki is added to, modified, etc.

See the LibreCAD Manual Wiki for more information.

Below are the sections that are in the User Manual. If anyone is interested in contributing, see "How-to-Contribute" in the forum. Also see this page for the current status.

- About: An overview of LibreCAD

- Getting Started: Installing and configuring

Basically here is a good place to post all kind of topics concerning documentation.
Consider our wide spread community all over the world, in different time zones, with individual daily routine.
Be patient when you don't get replies within minutes or few hours.
That applies for all other communication channels too.

If you have a more private concern, you don't want to discuss publicly, you can join one of our chat channels, where the attendance is not that wide.
You will meet community maintainer and developer there, if you have more specific questions.
Also, feel free to contact me by 'Send Email to LordOfBikes' in my forum profile.

Our IRC channel is #librecad on https://freenode.net/.
For IRC you have to stay online to receive replies.
IRC is a simple, straightforward, text only chat service.
There is a web client on freenode.net, but typically we use IRC chat clients to connect and communicate there.

A more modern chat tool is Zulip. We are at https://librecad.zulipchat.com/.
The advantage of Zulip is, that you can see what happens while you were offline, so you don't miss any reply.
Also communication is well assorted in streams and topics, what makes it easier to follow discussions or stay focused on a topic.
Zulip could be used from any browser, but also have clients for all major operating systems, even mobile apps.
