Getting LibreCAD 2.2 out to users

duncan.lithgow
I've read a few posts from people frustrated at the problems with installing LibreCAD 2.2, so here's me as a non-programmer who hasn't learnt how to package software trying to do something about that problem.

Ubuntu PPA
========

Updating an Ubuntu PPA is an obvious way to get LibreCAD updates out to users. The 2.2 branch is getting updates so there are still plans for a release

I have sent the following email to Scott Howard https://launchpad.net/~librecad-dev

Hi Scott

Sorry for writing to all your email addresses at once, I just wanted to make sure I got through. You have an Ubuntu PPA

ppa:showard314/librecad

... and I am wondering if this will be updated or if LibreCAD should try and find a new person willing to run a PPA. LibreCAD 2.2 has been at beta for years but is not getting much attention so I'm hoping that making it more easily available would help this situation. Please let me know so we can find the best way to make this software more available.
Regards, Duncan

I Scott is not going to update his PPA from v 1.0.0 beta 5 then we need to find someone else who can so LibreCAD 2.2 can get out to users. Anyone here have the skills or interest in setting up a PPA?

Automatic builds
============

There was a suggestion back in August 2019 to set up automatic builds of LibreCAD:

https://github.com/LibreCAD/LibreCAD/pull/1141

Anyone here have the skills or interest in setting up automatic builds?

Dion Moult has made a package of v2.2 for Gentoo but I'm not sure how long it takes for that to become available (is there really no way to tag people in this forum)

Windows
======
PS. If you're reading this and on windows then remember that you can install the windows build directly from github: https://github.com/LibreCAD/LibreCAD/releases

For those interested, the Gentoo package is filtering through the QA process here: https://github.com/gentoo/gentoo/pull/18548

Gentoo does not package binaries, so it may not be particularly useful for anyone outside Gentoo.

I think it would be great if LibreCAD 2.2 could be also distributed as a "portable", perhaps the same way Blender distributes, or using AppImage, which are auto-built which will help users adopt the latest code and help with testing.

Although it is not as easy as installing a package, there is still the 'building from source' option.

For Ubuntu, it is quite easy and documented in the User Manual : https://librecad.readthedocs.io/en/latest/appx/build.html#building-on-linux
This also allows to use different releases : I have the 2.1.3 official release installed for testing and backup (in case the last build is unstable which did not happen so far) and the last build (last development code) for  my work.
