Hello devs,
LibreCAD is going to apply to participate in Google Summer of Code. It's an opportunity for students to "flip bits, not burgers" over the summer. Students work with open-source projects as part of a summer internship sponsored by Google. Google pays the students $5000, and gives $500 to the organization for each student. The organization has "mentors" which will be paired up with a student to do a project. We are now looking for mentors and project proposals. Our organizational application is due March 9. As part of the application, we must prepare an "Ideas" page to advertise what projects we have available for students to do. Google will use this to figure out if we'll be accepted as a project. After we're allocated students (mid March), students will have until April 6 to talk with their mentors and apply for the program. After that, we will rank all the applications from LibreCAD and send it to Google who will then pick the students. Since we're in organizational mode now, we have to do our "Ideas List." I set up a wiki (on our new wiki!) to do that: http://wiki.librecad.org/index.php/GSoC_2012 @DEVS: Please read it over and think of potential projects you'd like students to do. I put a template up there that you can fill out when though thought of a project. I put three additional templates up there for things that have been discussed in the past. For each project we need to have a primary mentor and secondary mentor. Having a back-up is very important to Google. You are free to back up someone while being a primary mentor on another project. The proposed project idea list should be done in the next two weeks or so. After we have the list, we'll group them together into logical units, depending on the number and scope of proposals. Please respond to this thread with questions so we can discuss them in the open (unless there is a specific personal question, then contact me directly). Regards, Scott |
Hi,
Thanks a lot! I will begin to fill in the idea list. Regards, Dongxu On Tue, Feb 21, 2012 at 10:09 PM, showard314 [via LibreCAD] <[hidden email]> wrote: Hello devs, -- Dongxu Li, Ph.D. www.librecad.org |
Hello all,
This is last call for LibreCAD Ideas for GSoC. I'll finish up the application tomorrow and submit it. Debian has agreed to vouch for us, so that's a nice plus. Please put your contact info up on the Ideas site. You can obfuscate the email address to prevent scrapers from grabbing it, but it is very important to Google that contact info is there. http://wiki.librecad.org/index.php/GSoC_2012 Wish us luck! Cheers, Scott |
Thanks!
I will see if there are more to add from my side. Dongxu I hope I can added more from my part tonight. On Fri, Mar 2, 2012 at 9:26 AM, showard314 [via LibreCAD] <[hidden email]> wrote: Hello all, -- Dongxu Li, Ph.D. www.librecad.org |

Hi All,
I feel we should at Rallaz as a mentor, or at least a backup mentor. Seems to be only Ries and me listed, plus Anders on computational geometry related. Thanks, Dongxu

Hello,
I would like to be a mentor but I have doubts of comply with the responsibilities of mentoring. My big problem is the language, I only speak Spanish and Catalan, to write this post I need a translator and a long time. The other problem is that in summer (July or August) is when I'm on vacation and I dedicate my time to be with family and if there is a freelance work to do. However I'll try to help. Rallaz,
do not worry about your english skill, I think I can speak for everybody, your perfect to understand! Now, if you need to spend time with your family then by all mean, please do so. Family is more important then LibreCAD. I know for sure you will keep an eye on your email/IRC account so if there are any questions we might have on areas you have been active, like plugin interface we can always have you as a back-up. Rallaz's English has been great, but if he wants time off then that's good too. Rallaz: How about he put you as back-up mentor for "Plugin Interface" and "DWG Support"? We need a back-up for those two and he has lots of experience with both plugins and his dxfrw library. As back-up you just will help out when you can if you have time. ~Scott |

Hi everybody! First of all, I'm not a developer... but I want to know: is it difficult to write a plugin for openPLM?? Here are a few proposals: 1. Generation of thumbnails from open dxf files 2. Uploading to openplm server link for openPLM: http://www.openplm.org/ link for example of plugin (freeCAD): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C-tftc_nLYI&feature=player_embedded

Hey!,
If we get accepted for GSOC and we are going to finnish of the plugin interface and script support (required for what you want). then uploading screenshots to OpenPLM should be perfectly possible! If you currently want to do it I would suggest to use vec2web and use that to genertae thumbnails. Ries On Mar 6, 2012, at 2:32 PM, hsd8 [via LibreCAD] wrote:
