Over the last few days I have been scanning The COGO Book.  I finally have a large portion of the effort completed.  It is available at my aforementioned FTP site.

I am have the first chapter of the Book, "An Overview", to initiate a discussion between all as to the development process we might be able to follow.
What I have found in the first chapter is that it could be an exciting adventure, and very formidable.

1)  COGO is defined as a structured computer language.
2) That preparing a COGO program, using the COGO language, is an art.  I guess we could say the COGO language is the tool to implement the art.  In that it is an art, the use of COGO language should be flexible.  It is an engineering tool to solve engineering problems.
3) As such our first problem to solve could be preparing a Boundary Survey,
4)  At this level the needed tools could be considered minimal. Allowing for a small part of the language to be used, to achieve a big surveying problem.
5)  That is a lot said.  Do you see a similar summary for this chapter, "Overview".

Here is the answer I got, from a programmer of the original COGO programming language out of MIT, as to what happened to COGO?  I am in touch with him but he does not have much time to work on COGO at this point.  He is out of the University of South Florida, in Tampa.

" CLM COGO was abandoned when Charlie Miller died in 2000, but the name "cogo," applied to collections of coordinate geometry tools, continues to be widely represented in current software, notably AutoCAD Civil 3D and Carlson Survey. What has been lost is the concept of COGO as a language. All CLM COGO functions were batch-driven, controlled by a script that could be easily edited and rerun. Modern COGO is an interactive process that happens in a CAD program and cannot be easily documented, edited, or redone. For me, the difference between the CLM and modern varieties is the the difference between programming and drawing."  

I have apparently found a current version of CEAL Cogo. It is being developed further by entities in Australia. Please reply if interested in the progress. Joe

I have done much research on this topic over the years.  If CEALs COGO is now INTERNET based, it is a great step forward for a venerable program.
