Trimming problem with cursor?

When I select the trim command the cursor changes from the arrow to crosshairs and I can’t select the lines? Is there something simple I’m missing? Thanks in advance!

You can select the lines then. But with the trim command the line selected as limiting entity does not become a dashed line but only greyed out. When then selecting the entity to be trimmed it happens immediately.
