importing .dwg files created in other software packages

mikethetiler
Over the course of many years I have created a lot of .dwg files in various CAD software packages. The last package I used was NanoCad, being free at the time which converted all my old .dwg files into NanoCad .dwg files. NanoCad no longer do free use of their software and, in desperation to recover all my old drawings I took up a trial of AutoCad which successfully converted all the files into AutoCad .dwg format.
I now wish to use LibreCad as my preferred software but at present I am unable to open any of my files in LibreCad.
When I select File > open, all I get is an error box containing the message "experimental, save your work first."    Continue?
The options are either OK or Cancel, with the cursor being substituted by the microsoft wheel of doom.
Clicking OK produces a blank viewing panel, Cancel just leaves the start screen.
Any assistance woud be much appreciated
Thanks in advance
Mike
