Thanks for the quick reply dxli.

I have already installed LibreCAD-2.0 on my laptop but not from Ubuntu PPA - I found it in the Debian "experimental" repository (that's one grade less reliable than “unstable” I suppose ).
I shall try out your suggestions about blocks on the laptop but I also want to keep drawing for my metalworking projects on the desktop because it has a bigger screen (but it still has LC 1.0)
If I get on well with LC 2.0 beta - compile date: Feb 25 2013 - I may install it on my desktop too - or perhaps even try to understand building from source, as you suggest.
