Doesn't the checkbox pop up immediately after clicking on the line? If it does the line is selected and you can proceed and set the properties you want. It seems this function refers to always one object only so no highlighting is needed. In contrast, if you want to change attributes, you can select several objects and then close the selection with 'enter', in this case highlighting works. Maybe the instructions in the manual are just wrong or outdated.
