Hi,

I use the point tool for a couple of things:
1.  When I need a 'fixed' reference point (typically on a construction layer) to locate multiple entities from something other than 0,0 or the relative zero.
2.  A point with a wide line thickness, such as 2.0 mm, to indicate a location pin or similar datum on a drawing (visible in Print Preview):
