Dimensioning problem

I am not being able to get the program to display dimensions on my drawing.
I am a learner, so I am not sure there is problem with program or that I do not have everything together.
I click on the dimension toolbar, click on horizontal, click on the two points on the drawing, raise up a short distance and click again.  What is seen is two lines rising from the points with a line connecting them.  It looks like part of the drawing.

I have free snap and snap on end-points activated.

If you zoom in very far you will see there are the arrows, the dimension text and a gap to the object. It's a matter of the extent of the object, the intended scale, units and the dimensions settings in Options - Current Drawing Preferences - Dimensions. Play with these. Or tell more about your intentions. Read the manual for details.
