have you seen this: http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:Collection  ?
looks like one can have pdf and odt export

btw. recently I read that git can diff odt files

Yes,

mediawiki was actually the reason because you could create nice documentations from it, I forgot the name but RH is using that.
Without ranting how much I hate media wiki, it's hard to configure in such a way to make good looking
documentation. And you need people that are willing to invest considerable amouth of time
to add documentation that will really look good. I have never done that myself and at the moment no interest 
to make that work.
However, if there is a person with mediawiki experience that has this knowledge, I am more then willing to give
him access to our server and let him/her configure this.

A simple request from a complete beginner - can you include an explanation of what the 'draft' icon does - and 'it switches to and from daft mode' is not what I mean because I don't understand what draft mode means.

Draft mode displays the drawing more quickly by leaving detail out of the display, particularly useful on slow computers. The function is not explained in the User Manual or wiki but there are references in the wiki faq that if things aren't visible then check that draft mode is not on.
