Moving multiple objects at once, all end up on one layer

I am moving multiple objects at once. Many of them are on separate layers. After moving the objects they all end up on the same (active) layer. Is there any way to complete this operation so each object remains on the layer it was originally on?

I am running version 2.2.0-rc4-17-g07ef2b45 on a Macbook pro which is up to date.

 I see now that if I uncheck the 'Use current layer' when I make the move they remain on separate layers.
