New to cad programs, new to this forum, Hello from Ohio

I'm looking for some very basic information. I need to understand what exactly is import/export and its process. I assume that it is similar to upload/download. I have tried to export once and didn't get anywhere. Where or what would be a good video/wiki page/document that would walk me through the process and includes the basic, simple explanation. I believe that most manuals don't delve this deep, that most of this experience, the cad forums/products etc. assume the user already has. I don't.

Any help would be appreciated.
