adding hatches to LC

claus82
This post was updated on .
Hi people!
I already created this post, but I think it had a wrong name... so I'm reposting...
As you know in Application Edit>Preferences>Paths there is an option to give another folder for hatches, scripts and so on... Yet I decided to create this tutorial to add hatches to our defalult folder!
I know that many people know where to put files, but this tutorial is made to allow newbies to operate, I think this is a kind of "fairplay"!
Anyway, here the file (corrected).
http://forum.librecad.org/adding-hatches-to-LC-tp5708305p5708920.html

p.s. tell me if you would like to have some tutorial about a specific topic

See ya!

Re: adding hatches to LC

Thanks claus, this will be useful to bring me 'up to speed' on how things are done in LibreCAD.

Its funny because although someone may know about CAD and have used other cad software before - its still the little things with a new program that can slow you down, like how the common procedures are done or where a certain function is etc...

Claus, I think that as you are reasonably familiar with LibreCAD it would be a wonderful thing if you could work on a reference manual for LibreCAD, which could be compiled and added to future releases!

It could include icon reference, what the commands do and sections to guide people about saving, printing etc...

What do you think?

Yep friend, I could, I already tried to write a manual, but you know, the persistent finding job problem here took me some time, and I left the work, simultaneously bob took charge of this, and I would feel like a thief, because he's doing well, moreover he reached a good point! Anyway now I could take a deeper look ;)

obviousely I'd be happy to work on other parts if he has some to give!
see ya!

Re: adding hatches to LC

Sure, I understand Claus.

Well, not everyone understands the English language so how about some videos instead?
The videos could have no language but be very 'visually' clear for people. One on using the modify tools would be good!

Re: adding hatches to LC

I tried, but the video size was really huge... around 1Gb!!! I need a program (under windows) to record the screen and that generates a file that has not that big dimension!!!
as I'll find it I'll try to do them!

Re: adding hatches to LC

cantcode
claus82 can you please add these things to your manual?
#1 on linux you should copy your hatch to:  /usr/share/librecad/patterns/
you have to be superuser beeing able to copy the file to that directory
So on Ubuntu you could use something like this (you have to change the path of your self-made hatch):
   sudo cp /pathToYourSelfMadeHatch/myhatch.dxf /usr/share/librecad/patterns/

#2 If your hatch does not show up, try to change the "Scale" in the "Choose Hatch Attributes" window.
"There is a fix limit in LC to avoid huge memory and time consumption.
This limit is 100 in both directions. That means your pattern fits in Y direction more than 100 times and is therefore  abandoned. " As told by LordOfBikes http://forum.librecad.org/bugs-problems-when-using-selfmade-hatches-tp5708894p5708911.html

#2 Make sure "Draft mode" is disabled
Like told here: http://forum.librecad.org/No-Hatch-tp4738032p4738765.html by R. van Twisk

And add an update note in the first post of this topic?

Re: adding hatches to LC

Rallaz
Hi Claudio & cantcode,

Never copy the new hatch in
/usr/share/librecad/patterns/ (linux)
or
c:\Program Files\LIbreCAD\resources\patterns (windows)

These folders/directories are owned by Administrator/root and you should not add any files in those places.
If you install / uninstall / update LibreCAD or your system you can loss yours files.

If you make backups, are made from user's directory, like:

/home/rallaz (linux)
or
c:\Documents and settings\rallaz (windows)

Then, if you made a new hatch add it to:
windows: C:\Documents and Settings\rallaz\.LibreCAD\patterns
or C:\Documents and Settings\rallaz\My Documents\LibreCAD\patterns
Linux /home/rallaz/.LibreCAD/patterns

But the best, and the only one that should go in the documentation:

Create a folder like
windows: c:\myStuff\patterns
linux: /mount/sharedStuff/patterns

in "edit->aplication preferences" select tab "paths" and add c:\myStuff\patterns to "Hatch Patterns"

Re: adding hatches to LC

@Rallaz
You are totally right. It is so obvious what you said. In fact every time that I uninstall-reinstall LC, I re-add my other hatches manually in that directory c:\..... , but many people could not know this. And I did not even consider it!  Do you suggest I remove this tutorial? I would because it may cause several problems. I could create another one (corrected), 2 or 3 pages lasting...
If you agree I could delete this topic and re-do the tutorial. Perhaps it would be better.
Sorry for the mess friend
Just tell me what do you think is a better way.

Re: adding hatches to LC

Its your time...

for me the best is modify the tutorial changing the "copy to c:\program..." for "edit->aplication preferences".

over the rest, thanks for your work!

@rallaz
"These folders/directories are owned by Administrator/root and you should not add any files in those places.

Did not think of that . Thanks

"But the best, and the only one that should go in the documentation: ..."
What about letting LibreCAD creating those directories when installing?
windows: C:\Documents and Settings\rallaz\.LibreCAD\patterns
or C:\Documents and Settings\rallaz\My Documents\LibreCAD\patterns
Linux /home/rallaz/.LibreCAD/patterns
 or /home/rallaz/.config/LibreCAD/patterns

@claus82
sorry for the bad information
I would also just change the  "copy to c:\program..." for "edit->aplication preferences".
Maybe you should start to add a version number to your manual on the first page (or on each page in the header or footer and maybe in the file name itself)
Then just add a note in the first post that something changed and
A: add the file to the first post
or
B: just add the link to the post with the latest version

Re: adding hatches to LC

cantcode
rallaz, I looked at the code and it says:
librecad/src/lib/engine/rs_system.cpp  l.591
// Unix home directory, it's old style but some people might have stuff there.
    dirList.append(getHomeDir() + "/." + appDirName + "/" + subDirectory);

I tried  to create this folder /home/YOURUSERNAME/.librecad/patterns with a hatch inside and it works for me without setting this path in the preferences.
Can we add this to the tutorial?
Will this code remain or are there plans to remove this?

Re: adding hatches to LC

We should update those folders to new convention instead:

for unix:

$HOME/.config/LibreCAD/
