new to librecad

crsj01
hi all,

I have read many messages where people have volunteered but "the rest of the story" never materialized.

Is there a todo list somewhere so a newby like me can pick a task (not really a coder) and "have at it"?

later,
charles.....

Volunteered for what?

Tell us what you can do, ased on your skill set?

Write / improve manual / tutorials.

Submit bug reports.

Create a show case.

Make a library of reusable drawing objects (Part-Library).

hello responder,

I see a problem right away, how do I include the message to which I am responding into this post?

I can see why potential helpers are having problems, are you familiar with the concept of a circular argument?  (seller: "what will you pay me for X?", buyer: "what is the lowest price you will take for X?" deadlock)

since I am determined, I think this is a useful dialog for others, I have too many computer related degrees to list one of which is a Ph.D. in Information Systems and I have been working on/with computers since 1975 here are two avenues of behaviors to which we can proceed: 1) I could work on a small block of English (my native tongue) text and I could edit it and resubmit it for further inclusion in the project, 2) you can pick some small task for me to do (English related and not programming) and we can progress from there.  I may add that my grammar is not always but usually perfect, who's is except for an English teacher, most will understand the thought(s) I am trying to convey.

Once I get more familiar with all the tasks that must take place in the project it will be easier for me to make suggestions on what I would like to tackle.

I await your response,
charles.....

It all depends, how you respond. Just like normal Email, if you have
set to get email.

or through forum, when you reply, there is "button" marked "Quote".
Before sending message, better have preview using "preview" button.

I don't see any such issue.

That's great.

That's great!!! If you list degrees, then will let us know more about skillset.

Please make it more clear. Are you talking about "Documentation"?

Just one question. How you find LibreCAD useful to you. Are you using
it. If yes, for what purpose?

No. TO me things are not clear. You said you have many computer
related degree, still you don't want to contribute any coding. You
wanted to do some English (your native language) related stuff, but
you warned us about your not so good grammar.

Re: new to librecad

Dear responder, the following is a cut and paste of what I sent to another email that turns out not to be a good one (at least no response up to now).
========================================
Dear hardeep,

Your assumption about my interest in documentation was correct.  My Ph.D. was from the BCIS department at University of North Texas at Denton, Texas.  The programming language of the majors there was Cobol on mainframes (and still is), the Computer Science Department majors had to take Pascal on DEC minicomputers.  I was a computer science minor but I never had to learn C or C++ along the way.  Therefore my shyness with regard to the programming aspect of the project.  If/when I get into C++ that may change.  I have written code in Cobol, Fortran, Basic, Assembler (S370) and Pascal.

I downloaded and installed LibreCAD 1.0.2 for Windows several months ago and started playing with it.  I use it to generate pictures like birds-eye-views of cars/houses/landscapes/pool tables and stuff like that so I don't really use it to make money per say.

There is a concept in the computer world I like to call "good enough".  This occurs where a user has hardware or software that may be combined to solve a problem.  It is not the fastest or the sexiest or the slickest or anything like that, it just gets the job done without a lot of hassles.  Like a comparison between the real AutoCAD program and the LibreCAD program.  Why spend $4000 when it isn't necessary.

I guess my comments about English grammar didn't come off quite as well as I had hoped.  I was a professor for 12 years and in the beginning I was usually surprised at how many university students couldn't write an intelligent paragraph (pet peeve).

I really believe in "free" software and I am still interested in helping.

later,
charles......
==============================================
Please let me know how to properly address you since "responder" doesn't seem to have the right ring to it.  Is hardeep ok?

thank you,
charles.....

All mails are good, if written with good intentions by persons like you.

True. But not because mail was not good, rather because mail was very
good, so wanted to reply when I have good time.

I was travelling, and kept it pending as this long mail deserves long reply.

That's great. You are Old Horse ;-)

One can learn 2nd language (workable) with a day. Learning 1st
language is difficult.

I see you are determined, and with your background, you can do C++
coding easily.

It is OK. I suggest you make your bog, and showcase you hard-work.
Also contribute your drawings for "Showcase" of LibreCAD.

Excellent.

Never mind. Take it easy.

Sad :-(

Wonderful. If you find interesting, may I suggest to start teaching
LibreCAD to school going kids.

Everything is fine. No one mind on mailing lists / discussion forums.
Everyone interact with list members and not to individual, in general.
Hardeep is my 1st name and Rai is last/family name.

Re: new to librecad

crsj01@gmail.com
dear hardeep,

thanks for the response.  I have been looking around a bit and found bob, a person who has been working on a current book/tutorial for LC 2.0.  I may get up enough gumption to contact him and see where it goes.  Being a computer person means my main machine is always in flux.  Seems I need 3 or 4 machines to get anywhere with any of them.  I am not a big fan of virtual machines (one machine, one os) but I can see their advantages to business.  I saw your suggested list of sites for learning C, I already know about, been to and utilized most of them.  There is a huge difference between a beginner and someone who has 3 solid years of programming experience with a language (a wish for me and C).  A good market for LibreCAD might be professionals using SuSE instead of AutoCAD/Windows.  Autodesk has sworn never to support the Linux market.  One of their tricks is to constantly change their standard file formats.  This makes pro's need to buy the latest version of their software.  It also makes it more difficult to build up bigger picture/parts libraries for competitors.  I'm glad we finally got on the same page and I will try some of your suggestions.

later,
charles.....
