rectangle,hatching and trimming tools not working

Dear nabble and all, I have found librecad great fun but cannot get the rectangle tool to work etc, have uninstalled and reinstalled latest version and cannot find answer on forum. I am not an IT person, but have followed seo for about 15 years and wanted to add some work based on librecad. Can anyone help.
