Hello everybody,
I downloaded LibreCAD a while a ago and I'm very happy with it. Most things I wanted to do I found a way to, but I couldn't figure out the following: How can I copy objects or drawings from one document into another one? I know how to copy from one layer to another one or how to copy things in general. Thanks for your help, Matt |

Hello Claude,
Thanks for your answer. I know these commands, but somehow I don't get them to work. Matt |

I think this is a feature still to be implemented.
I added it to our 2012 GSOC idea list: http://wiki.librecad.org/index.php/GSoC_2012#General_GUI_improvement dxli |
Hello Dxli,
Thanks for your answer. It'll be a useful feature, but until it's implemented I'll make do without it. Regards, Matt |
You can copy from one document to another as long as they are both in the same instance of LibreCad.
Sooo... Open up one file in LibreCAD Then use the File-->Open Menu item (or the open folder shortcut) to open the 2nd file Now you can copy and paste between the two. If the other file is in a new instance, then you cannot copy and paste. |
Thanks Coriwright,
I'll try that a try! Cheers, Matt |

Hello,
I use libreCAD 1.0.2 from Debian Wheezy. I cannot manage to do copy-paste between files. Typical steps: - open libreCAD - sketch something (for example a circle, anywhere) and select it - Edit -> Copy - File -> New - Edit -> Paste - Clic in the middle of the screen to place the entity after that I get nothing, Zoom auto does not show anything either. Should I do it differently? Is this a bug? Sincerely, Olivier |

Hi Olivier!
Honestly I need to do this operation too, personally this is what I do: File-Import-Block then I import the entire drawing that I need, next I explode it, so I choose what I need and I delete what I don't need. Ta da!!! See ya! Cla

Hi Claus82,
Your trick looks cool but with my version of LibreCAD the "import" menu is deactivated... *sob* ! Sincerely, Olivier |

Ok Oliver. I got it!!!
shortly: save the file that you need to import into the block list and import it in your drawing. More detailed: Open the file that you need to insert, save it into the folder "misc" (when you install LibreCAD is the folder containing the files SCREW, A3, TUX T-PART), then close it and open the file where you need to import the block. Now, check your library browser into the folder "misc"... TA DAAAAAA!!! And now you can insert the other file! ...or you can install the version 2!!! Best regards my friend Claudio

Hello,
I see this thread has been going for some time but also that the last post is not too old so hopefully I'll be OK adding to it now. Like people above, I wish I could find some way to copy a selection of one or more entities from one drawing to another. I've tried the method suggested by Claus82, but when I try to save the file in .../misc, I get the message: Cannot save the file /usr/share/librecad/library/misc/TwoCircles.dxf Please check the permissions. I know about Linux file permissions but I don't understand why it should be a problem in files I've installed or created myself I'm using LC version 1 on Debian 7.0 (stable) Thanks for any help... |
hi,
block features are improved in LibreCAD-2.0 series, you may choose to build from source or try ubuntu PPA, the same deb file should be valid on debian. clearly, it's not a good way to enable user write access for /usr/share/librecad/ you can set library path to a place under your home direction by: main menu: Edit -> Application Preferences -> Paths -> Part Library

Thanks for the quick reply dxli.
I have already installed LibreCAD-2.0 on my laptop but not from Ubuntu PPA - I found it in the Debian "experimental" repository (that's one grade less reliable than “unstable” I suppose ). I shall try out your suggestions about blocks on the laptop but I also want to keep drawing for my metalworking projects on the desktop because it has a bigger screen (but it still has LC 1.0) If I get on well with LC 2.0 beta - compile date: Feb 25 2013 - I may install it on my desktop too - or perhaps even try to understand building from source, as you suggest. Thanks again. |

I found this, some ten years later, and thought I'd provide a solution.
The issue I found was that, when you hit Edit -> Copy, it will ask you for base coordinates in the window where you normally type copy/move coordinates. This is easy to miss if you're used to copy/paste just working, and clicking on some location on the page doesn't seem to satisfy it. The same is true when you do the paste, and the geometry won't show up on the page until you tell it where it needs to go. |

Correct, that's the intended method.
See https://librecad.readthedocs.io/en/latest/ref/menu.html?highlight=reference%20point#edit-1 And having multiple documents open, preferred in Tab mode, copy/paste between them is no problem too.
investing less than half an hour into Search function can save hours or days of waiting for a solution
