Trimming

New to this program.
Cannot trim a polyline or use a polyline to trim.
What am I missing? The answer doesn't seem to be in the User's Manual.

Normal trim command does not work with polylines.
There is Tools - Polyline - Trim segments. But this also is very capricious to work or not. Sometimes it does.
