Hi
I am new to LibreCAD, working with DraftSite 2D free until now (AutoCAD before), will not be available free from December 31, 2019 file.dwg I try to open a file.dwg in LibreCAD, what I am getting is a small window that writes: "experimental, save your work first" If I click "OK" button I get: "Cannot open the file...... Please check it's existence and permissions" If I click "Cancel" button I get the same "Cannot....." File.dxf Opens, but can't see the file on the screen Both files opens in DraftSite. I suppose I am missing something. Please help Best wishes Iosif |

I don't use DraftSite 2D. Can you make a small demo file with the issue and post it?

From the error message we can't estimate what's wrong with your files.
If you can share the files (DXF and DWG) in public, you can upload both here. Otherwise you can sent them by mail to me (librecad[at]mail.lordofbieks.de). If even this is impossible, I can't say what's wrong with your files. Armin
investing less than half an hour into Search function can save hours or days of waiting for a solution

Thank you for the answer Lord Of Bikes.
CT13_Construction.dwg CTY10VAKA_Unfold.dxf The drawings are of two small trimarans. As I mentioned before, the drawings were made in DraftSite and are opening in DraftSite without problems. Best wishes Iosif |

The dxf works, it's just out of sight, do an Auto Zoom, and it's there.
The dwg indeed doesn't. DWG import is experimental, may work or not. Maybe LordOfBikes will be able to tell more. Best save in Draftsight as DXF 2007 or use an external tool like Theiga file converter. |

In reply to this post by Iosif
I'm new to this forum, but found this message. I've just installed librecad on Ubuntu 18.04LTS to use some older architectural .dwg files. No joy. This thread mentions the error that I am getting "Please check it's existence and permissions" and gives as answer "DWG import is experimental, may work or not."
Well, the file exists, and on the off-chance, I've chmod'ed all the .dwg files to 777 Is there a trick or recommendation? If not, is there another OpenSource Linux/Debian distro that can open .dwg files? Thanks -- Paul |

Sorry, it's not "basic", in real life it fails. I have supported, and continue to support the Linux, open source, future of IT for three decades or more (started writing Fortran/Cobol in the late 1950s). I have a Win .exe that runs under 98SE (in an Oracle VM) that opens .dwg, manipulates them with no problems, but has next-to-no output capability.
We -- the Linux, Debian, Ubuntu, whatever, community need to get our backsides into gear. If LibreCad can't do it, and insist on going back to 23 year old M$ software, we (you, me, the community) are missing out on "the future." So be it -- Paul |

I was like you but then I read Switch to LibreDWG #1055 Response, including all the links.
That's not even the problem. Somewhere I read the dwg format changes regularly and it isn't documented. So dwg compatibility is probably a bigger job that LibreCAD itself. The real question is: Should LibreCAD offer dwg support? It might be better to drop it and have a reference in the manual to use a third-party program to convert it. In my experience, the only company to do full dwg support is Autodesk®. |

For those interested in better DWG support this issue may be interesting: https://github.com/LibreCAD/LibreCAD_3/issues/207
